Major Findings for the United States
The number of universities was found to greatly outnumber the number of companies, government labs, research institutions and policy centers (see Figure 1).
In all, 33 of 50 states and the District of Columbia were found to contain at least one company, government laboratory, research institution, university or policy center (see Figure 2).
California was found to have the most entries, but Massachusetts, New York, and Texas were also found to have a significant level of activity (see Figure 2).
